Stephanie Way

Ride for a few hours… or a few days! With seemingly endless trail options, this easy-to-access spot is a true “Choose Your Own Adventure” destination.

Nestled in the Carson Valley, with the Carson Range to the west and the Pine Nut Range to the east, this trailhead offers so many options for riders. Ride right out of the parking area into a vast network of single-track and two-track trails as well as wide sandy backroads. There is enough here to ride a few miles or a whole day, and it warrants repeat visits. Pick a direction – you’ll enjoy scenic views whether you stay in the flatlands or ride into the hills.

All the trails and dirt roads in this area are on BLM-managed public land. This is classic high desert terrain thick with sagebrush, Mormon tea, and rabbit brush. In the hills, the trails weave through pinyon pine and juniper trees. There are no signs but it would be hard to get lost. This is a fun trail system to meander around and see what you find.

The trails are all mostly sandy footing, with occassionally lightly rocky patches in the hills. Nothing technical except a few little climbs in the hills if you want. If you do make it as far as the Pine Nut Mountains then you’ll encounter some rockier and technical trails. There are some old mines in the canyons of the Pine Nuts.

There is no water along any of the trails (unless you ride to the Carson River, which is possible) so make sure to carry some. It can get pretty hot in the peak summer months here so for that reason we recommend this as a spring/fall/winter riding spot.

This is a popular OHV spot so you’re bound to run into dirt bikes, quads, or mountain bikes, but with so much open country you can usually see or hear them coming and there is plenty of space to make way for each other. I have never had a problem with other recreation users here; they have always been respectful of equestrians.

Getting Here

Where to Park: Follow Stephanie Way until the paved road turns to dirt. There is a large gravel parking area with plenty of room for rigs on both sides, as well as a turn-around loop. Technically, this parking lot is only for equestrians.
