Enjoy a quiet stay on the edge of Lassen Volcanic National Park and ride scenic forest trails.

Just two hours northwest of Reno you’ll find Bogard Campground, a lovely Forest Service-managed horse camp. This moderately used site is great for a few days of riding and exploring the network of dirt roads among the pines and the aspens. In the spring, this area is lush with meadows and flowers and in the fall, you’ll love the changing leaves.
Campground
Bogard has four dedicated equestrian sites, each with two corrals. (8 corrals total) Each campsite has a picnic table and fire ring, plus a big pull-in (not pull-through) for a rig. Pine Creek runs past the campground.
The campground has two vault toilets and garbage cans. There is also a potable water handpump (seasonal). There are no bear bins. The campground also has several non-equestrian campsites. This is a first-come-first-serve campground and is currently free. (The Forest Service is considering a proposal to implement a fee for this campground.)
Trails
For such a nice equestrian campground, it’s a shame that there aren’t more dedicated single-track trails. With so much downed debris it is also difficult to bushwhack. Instead, you’re mostly limited to riding the network of Forest Service roads and logging roads that surround the campground – of which there are many. These are generally very easy, wide, graded roads. Nothing technical.
The Dixie Fire tore through this region in 2021 and the scars are still very visible. There are many swaths of burned trees and large clean-up piles. Even without an abundance of “trails” this is still a very nice horse camp that offers lots of easy riding in a beautiful area.
