If you’re looking for a place to rack up some rugged trail miles, then you might enjoy this desert spot. You’ll find the McCullough Hills trailhead on the very south edge of Henderson where it meets Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area. This vast landscape is full of trails to explore so you can always ride something different.
This part of the Mojave Desert isn’t as lush as some others. Instead, you’ll ride through pretty barren terrain. There’s not much here but volcanic rock and scrub brush. Still, the mountains make for some interesting views. It’s hard to believe this much solitude can be found less than 15 miles from the sensory overload of the Las Vegas Strip.
There are literally dozens of single track trails that crisscross the desert and wind along the hills, all of which are open to equestrians. Signage is inconsistent and sparse, but because it is such wide open space, it should be hard to get lost. It is pretty easy to connect trails to make loops. Some parts of the trails can be quite rocky, so boots or shoes are recommended. There are also sandy washes you can ride. Keep your eyes open for the elusive Gila monsters that live here.
There is no water on these trails and no shade. For that reason, it is best to explore the McCullough Hills in the fall, winter, and spring. Given its location to the city, the trails can get busy on the weekend. You can expect hikers, dog walkers, runners, and cyclists. The trailhead has a bathroom, water bottle station, garbage cans, picnic tables, and hitching posts.
Is this the most scenic place to ride in Las Vegas? No, but if you are looking for virtually endless miles in the wide open desert, then this is an easy access spot to have on your radar.
