This fun little trail offers nonstop views along an engaging route through the Pine Nut Mountains. The Pinyon Trail is managed by the Carson Valley Trails Association and features just over 5 miles of non-motorized, single track trail that winds and weaves through forested hills east of Gardnerville.
From the trailhead, the trail gently climbs for about one mile to a junction. Riders can go either way to make a lollipop loop. The trail wraps around a prominent hill, giving sweeping scenic views of the Sierra Nevada, Carson Valley, and Pine Nut and Carson Ranges. The route meanders through a nice forest of pinyon pine and juniper trees.
There is nothing technical about this trail, but it is not boring. You can tell it was laid out with mountain bikes in mind because it features tons of switchbacks which makes for a continuously interesting ride. The elevation gain is minimal (roughly 300 feet or so) and the grade is very mild. The footing is only lightly rocky at best. There is very clear signage along the trail.
In theory, you could ride the Pinyon Trail year-round if the weather is good. There is no water on the trail, so you may want to avoid the peak summer. Sections can also get muddy, so also avoid the rain and snow seasons. The trail is popular with mountain bikes (but not excessively), runners, and dog walkers. This is also black bear and mountain lion country.
